The Sport Lived Hockey Academy gives you the chance to play and train in Cape Town, the oldest and most attractive city in South Africa. Our course provides the ultimate hockey experience: you’ll receive elite coaching and have access to outstanding training facilities.

Sporting adventures

Our hockey academy programme runs for 6 weeks from April – May and June - August. Whilst on the programme, you’ll train at the academy during the week and play matches for a local club at the weekends. You’ll share accommodation with other Sport Lived participants close to the hockey academy venues.

Whilst at the Academy you will receive a personalised coaching programme which includes:

  • Coaching sessions with an elite coach
  • Developing a better understanding of your game
  • The facilitation of self-analysis
  • Game plan formulation
  • Adapting your game to different match situations
  • Developing your technical awareness
  • Sessions with a Sports Performance Coach
  • Help in finding what “being at your best” looks and feels like so as to optimise potential
  • Goal setting that brings out the best mind set and performance
  • Help in identifying blockages to performance and tools that can be used to enable a more consistent performance
  • The development of a “performance plan” which you can continuously monitor and self-correct when out of form
  • Fitness assessment and personalised training program from The High Performance Centre at The Sport Science Institute of South Africa


All academy sessions take place at Western Province Hockey Club which is located close to your accommodation and has some of the best hockey facilities in South Africa.

What to expect

When you arrive at the academy a thorough assessment will be made of your strengths and weaknesses. This assessment provides the basis of your training programme at the academy. Performance objectives are set and continually reviewed as development occurs.


A typical weekly schedule of the programme is shown below. During the programme you’ll work on all areas of your game. In addition, you’ll also play matches with a club at the weekends and attend club practices during the week

Social events with Sport Lived

The cities you can visit with Sport Lived are some of the most exciting and welcoming on the planet, and there always seems to be something interesting going on. So to help you make the most of your time away, our local staff organise social events like trips to top sporting occasions, surfing lessons, welcome dinners and loads more besides. They’ll also try to assist you get tickets to events you want to watch while you're away, and give you expert advice on the best things to see and do in the city.

Membership of a local sports club

One of the best things about travelling with Sport Lived is that we arrange for you to join a local sports club. We handpick clubs with lots of members and different teams - some of whom have regular social events. Some clubs may offer preseason tours, and in the past some clubs have organised welcome events for new players. Trust us, you’ll feel like an old hand within a few days and the other members will make sure there’s never a dull moment!

A great place to stay in the centre of town

We offer programmes in some fantastic cities, and we know that to make the most of your time away, you need to be right in the centre of the action. So we make sure that your accommodation is in the heart of the city - just a short walk away from all the best cafes, restaurants, bars, shops and pretty much anything else you’ll ever need.

Having a few friends to share your experiences with is a huge part of any foreign trip – they make the whole experience loads easier and loads more fun. So you’ll always share your swish city centre accommodation with other Sport Lived participants - that way you’ll have a ready-made group of friends from the minute you step off the plane!


Do you have to be a really good hockey player to attend the academy?

No. Players of all abilities can attend the hockey academy in Cape Town where they’ll receive quality coaching and play matches to improve their game.

Where is the academy located?

All hockey academy sessions take place at WPCC Hockey Club, which has some of the best sporting facilities in Cape Town, and is a short work from your accommodation.  There are two hockey turfs, a fitness centre, tennis courts and a swimming pool.  

Do players on the programme play matches for a club?

Yes. All players on the programme train with a club during the week and play matches in Western Province’s Premier Hockey Competitions at the weekends.

Is there an opportunity to coach hockey in Cape Town?

Yes. We can arrange for you to coach hockey on a voluntary basis in schools close to your accommodation.

Premium Accommodation

Choose our Premium Accommodation in South Africa and you’ll live in a 4 star guest house in one of Cape Town’s most historic suburbs. Your playing or coaching placement will be easily accessible and you will be in touching distance of the world famous Newlands rugby and cricket grounds.

You’ll share a twin room with another Sport Lived participant; all rooms are ensuite and have a TV. There are plenty of communal areas where you can relax after coaching and training sessions and socialise with other Sport Lived participants. The guest house has excellent facilities including a swimming pool and a gym!
