Spending 6 months in Melbourne through Sport Lived was a life-changing adventure. I had always wanted to visit Australia, and the chance to play competitive cricket while exploring the country made it an easy decision.
Joining Richmond Cricket Club was an amazing experience, with games most Sundays in both T20 and 30-over formats and Thursday night training followed by a selection meal. The meals were a great way to socialise with my teammates and learn more about Aussie culture. The women were so welcoming and were always keen to catch up outside of training.

Beyond cricket, I volunteered as a sports photographer, working with Albert Parkrun, local running and rowing clubs, and attending flatmates' cricket matches to capture their games. The programme included amazing excursions. Phillip Island’s coastal views and penguin watching were unforgettable, and surfing at Ocean Grove was a highlight. With my flatmates, I ventured outside Melbourne to experience more of Victoria. On the drive out of the city, my eyes were glued to the changing landscape. We witnessed the breathtaking views of the Great Ocean Road, its rock formations, clear waters, and wildlife, including koalas and kangaroos in the Grampians!
Balancing work and sport was surprisingly manageable. I took on shifts with event companies, officiated sports events, and did remote work from local cafés. Having a routine provided structure, but still allowed me enough time to relax, socialise and explore a new city.

Living in shared accommodation was an adjustment at first, but within a week, it felt completely normal. Our schedules kept us all busy, but we crossed paths over meals, movie nights or gym sessions. Turning 21 in Melbourne was unforgettable - my flatmates planned a full day out, and my cricket teammates threw a surprise party. Christmas was equally memorable, starting with a morning parkrun before heading to the beach for a true Aussie Christmas. New Year’s Eve was spent by the sea, watching the sunset, playing card games and enjoying fireworks over the city skyline.
Determined to make the most of my time, I tried some new activities such as Muay Thai, a rowing taster session, visited several climbing gyms, and even gave Aussie footy a go! I watched several WBBL and BBL matches, the iconic Boxing Day Test (sitting near the dugout and chatting with some cricketing legends!) a Matildas football match, the Australian Open, several Richmond AFL games and even the Women’s Ashes.
The level of support I received from Sport Lived was truly incredible. From Day 1, they were always available to answer any questions I had. When we arrived, Kathy helped us get settled in. She organised regular social events and catch-ups throughout the 6 months and was always ready to help with anything we needed. Reflecting on the past six months, I feel incredibly grateful for the experiences, friendships, and growth I’ve gained. The combination of competitive sport, travel, and independence has equipped me with valuable skills for the next chapter of my life. I came to Melbourne to play cricket, but soon realised I was here for so much more.
