It was a gloriously hot summers day as we arrived at the MCG for our session with one of the greats – David Hussey. As we made our way through the world famous stadium we couldn’t help but take a few pictures. When we eventually made it to the indoor nets we were faced with the Victoria Cricket team finishing their session – what a way to start the session!
Once they had finished we started to pad up and introduced ourselves to David Hussey!!!! (not something you get to do every day, especially us below average village cricketers). We each had a 20 minute 1 on 1 slot with David which was an incredible experience. While one person was with David the others would be facing a bowling machine - attempting to put his tips into practice.
Ed Belger who confidently volunteered to face the machine first was brought back down to earth abruptly being cleaning struck square in the crown jewels facing the first 2 deliveries. However, he struggled on and survived the rest of the session unscathed, managing to get his bat to a few balls. After our 1 on 1’s we had the chance to ask David Hussey a few questions, listen to the advice he would give to an overseas cricketer and get the obligatory photo and hand shake.
Overall it was an amazing experience that will live long in the memory of all of us.
Never again will we get the chance to experience coaching from such a high profile player in such a high Profile venue. I would like to thank Jessie McCartney for organising it all and David Hussey for giving us a once in a life time experience!
