Sport Lived Success Stories: Alex Goble

• Posted in Australia / Gap Year / Rugby Union • By Florence Morton

Up and coming rugby star, Alex, spent time at the Sport Lived Rugby Academy in Brisbane in 2015. This summer he was picked for the England U20 Counties tour to Russia, and is currently trialling for the Nottingham RFC 1st team. Here we get the lowdown on his Sport Lived programme, and how it's helped his game since.

Hi Alex, please talk us through a typical day on your Sport Lived programme:

I'd wake up and have a large breakfast with the boys, and then depending on training we might head out to the pool to catch some rays, before it was time to have lunch. We'd then head to the University of Queensland campus to start training. We always had a gym session, and then depending on the day we'd either have Academy training or Colts training.

How did you find Australia? Could you sum up Brisbane in three words?

Australia is an incredible country! 100% will be returning.

Brisbane in 3 words- Mini London, Opportunties

How does the approach to sport in Australia differ from in the UK? What did you learn from a sporting perspective while you were out there?

Playing sport in Brisbane helped me adapt and improve my skills. I developed different playing styles, working on a much quicker, flowing game both in defence and attack.

What have you been up to since returning to the UK? Has your experience of playing rugby in Australia helped you since you’ve returned?

The experience of playing rugby in Australia has helped me become a better player since returning to the UK. Since returning I have completed my first year at Nottingham Trent University playing in the 1st team, which has just been promoted to Premier A BUCS. I also spent the year playing for the Nottingham RFC Academy where I'm now doing pre season with the 1st team on trial. I have recently returned from Russia where I played in two international games against Russia U20s for England U20s Counties.

Please describe your Sport Lived programme in one sentence:

Sporting highlight: Representing the University of Queensland

Non sporting highlight: Heading up to Byron Bay frequently at weekends with the boys

Best bit: Everything

Worst bit: Being so far away from my family

Why should someone do a Sport Lived programme?

Great opportunity to get links in other countries with high quality coaching out there.

Your lasting Sport Lived memory?

The boys I spent it with.
