Whilst in Cape Town you’ll undertake a coach development course to broaden your rugby knowledge and make you a better coach. You’ll then put what you’ve learnt in to practice by coaching young rugby players at schools and clubs in Cape Town.

So, you’re passionate about rugby and want to share this with youngsters in an exciting overseas environment? With a Sport Lived coaching placement, you can develop your own coaching skills whilst passing your knowledge and enthusiasm on to the next generation.
Our South African rugby coaching placements run for 6 weeks and start in April and June. Whilst in South Africa you’ll undertake a professional coach development course to enhance your coaching skills and broaden your knowledge. You’ll also gain coaching experience working with local school and club rugby teams in Cape Town. Coaches can expect around 5-10 hours of coaching work per week. During your 6 week programme, you’ll also have 16 hours of seminars and practical sessions during your coach development course.
Our programmes are designed to give you a broad, enriching and rewarding coaching experience. The coach development course will make you a better and more knowledgeable coach and you’ll gain diverse coaching experience working with rugby players in some of South Africa’s top schools and youngsters from deprived areas of Cape Town.
A Sport Lived coaching placement is a great addition to your CV. You’ll develop organisational, leadership and communication skills. Having taken responsibility for a team of mini South Africans you’ll feel ready for anything!
In order to guarantee your Sport Lived rugby coaching programme, you’ll need to obtain coaching qualifications before you leave. As a minimum, you should obtain an RFU Level 1 Coaching Qualification or higher. We also recommend that you get as much as possible practical coaching experience before your departure.
If you’re unable to obtain a rugby coaching qualification before you join us please let us know. Some schools are happy to employ coaches who just have playing and coaching experience. Further details of how and where to obtain rugby coaching qualifications can be found at the RFU website.
1. What type of visa do I need?
British Citizens do not need to apply for a visa before travelling to South Africa. Upon entry you will be issued with a 90 day visa, if you wish to stay in the country for longer you can leave, go to a neighbouring country, and be issued with another 90 day visa when you re-enter South Africa.
2. Do I need to be an experienced coach?
No! To guarantee your coaching placement, you should obtain relevant coaching qualifications prior to departure. This will give you the necessary skills to plan and organise coaching lessons. In addition, gaining practical coaching experience will provide excellent preparation for your programme.
Choose our Standard Accommodation in South Africa and you’ll live in a hostel/ lodge in a dorm room or twin room. All our Standard pads are centrally located and provide easy access to your sports club, coaching placement and nearby entertainment.

Choose our Premium Accommodation in South Africa and you’ll live in a 4 star guest house in one of Cape Town’s most historic suburbs. Your playing or coaching placement will be easily accessible and you will be in touching distance of the world famous Newlands rugby and cricket grounds.

You’ll share a twin room with another Sport Lived participant; all rooms are ensuite and have a TV. There are plenty of communal areas where you can relax after coaching and training sessions and socialise with other Sport Lived participants.
