If you want to develop your skills as a hockey coach while immersing yourself in a vibrant new culture, this programme is just the thing. Whilst in Cape Town you’ll undertake a coach development course to broaden your hockey knowledge and make you a better coach.   You’ll then put what you’ve learnt in to practice by coaching young hockey players at schools and clubs in Cape Town.

Sporting adventures

Our programmes in Cape Town offer a great opportunity to broaden your coaching knowledge, gain hands on coaching whilst immersing yourself in a new culture. During the placement you will coach hockey in leading schools and clubs and also work with disadvantaged youngsters in Cape Town. 

You’ll enjoy weekly social activities so you can experience all the amazing things on offer in Cape Town and the surrounding area. You’ll also live in centrally located accommodation which you’ll share with other Sport Lived participants. 

Coaching hockey in South Africa

So, you’re passionate about hockey and want to share this with youngsters in an exciting overseas environment? With a Sport Lived coaching placement, you can develop your own coaching skills whilst passing your knowledge and enthusiasm on to the next generation.  

Overview

Our South African hockey coaching placements run for 6 weeks and start in April and June.   Whilst in South Africa you’ll undertake a professional coach development course to enhance your coaching skills and broaden your knowledge. You’ll also gain coaching experience working with local school and club hockey teams in Cape Town. Coaches can expect around 5-10 hours of coaching work per week. During your 6 week programme, you’ll also have 16 hours of seminars and practical sessions during your coach development course. 

Broad Experience

Our programmes are designed to give you a broad, enriching and rewarding coaching experience. The coach development course will make you a better and more knowledgeable coach and you’ll gain diverse coaching experience working with hockey players in some of South Africa’s top schools and youngsters from deprived areas of Cape Town.  

A Sport Lived coaching placement is a great addition to your CV. You’ll develop organisational, leadership and communication skills. Having taken responsibility for a team of mini South Africans you’ll feel ready for anything!

Qualifications

In order to guarantee your Sport Lived hockey coaching programme, you’ll need to obtain coaching qualifications prior to departure.  You’ll need an England Hockey Level 1 Coaching Qualification or higher.  We also recommend that you get as much practical experience as possible prior to your departure.

If you’re unable to obtain a coaching qualification before you join us please let us know. Some schools are happy to employ individuals who just have experience of playing and coaching hockey. So to help you make the most of your time away, our local staff organise social events like trips to top sporting occasions, surfing lessons, welcome dinners and loads more besides. They’ll also try to assist you get tickets to events you want to watch while you're away, and give you expert advice on the best things to see and do in the city.

We offer programmes in some fantastic cities, and we know that to make the most of your time away, you need to be right in the centre of the action. So we make sure that your accommodation is in the heart of the city - just a short walk away from all the best cafes, restaurants, bars, shops and pretty much anything else you’ll ever need.

Having a few friends to share your experiences with is a huge part of any foreign trip – they make the whole experience loads easier and loads more fun. So you’ll always share your swish city centre accommodation with other Sport Lived participants - that way you’ll have a ready-made group of friends from the minute you step off the plane!

FAQs

1. What type of visa do I need?

British Citizens do not need to apply for a visa before travelling to South Africa. Upon entry you will be issued with a 90 day visa, if you wish to stay in the country for longer you can leave, go to a neighbouring country, and be issued with another 90 day visa when you re-enter South Africa.

 

2. Do I need to be an experienced coach?

No! To guarantee your coaching placement, you should obtain relevant coaching qualifications prior to departure. This will give you the necessary skills to plan and organise coaching lessons. In addition, gaining practical coaching experience will provide excellent preparation for your programme.

Standard Accommodation

Choose our Standard Accommodation in South Africa and you’ll live in a hostel/ lodge in a dorm room or twin room. All our Standard pads are centrally located and provide easy access to your sports club, coaching placement and nearby entertainment.

You’ll share a dorm or twin room with other Sport Lived participants. You’ll get fully equipped kitchen facilities, a secure base for your belongings and large comfortable communal areas where you can catch up with other Sport Lived participants and travellers from around the world.

Premium Accommodation

Choose our Premium Accommodation in South Africa and you’ll live in a 4 star guest house in one of Cape Town’s most historic suburbs. Your playing or coaching placement will be easily accessible and you will be in touching distance of the world famous Newlands rugby and cricket grounds.

There are plenty of communal areas where you can relax after coaching and training sessions and socialise with other Sport Lived participants.
